Bio
Danae Palaka is a drummer and artist based in İstanbul.
Born in Athens to a musical family partially hailing from Istanbul, she relocated there to explore the city’s heritage and her own roots.
She picked up the piano at the age of 5, but later found her voice behind the drum-kit after switching between piano, cello and singing. Her energetic and dense drumming style is influenced by Anatolian, Balkan and Afrobeat rhythms, UK jazz and electronic music, while her interest in researching alternative qualities of the drum-kit results in new soundscapes and conceptual projects.
Currently studying at İstanbul Technical University, she is focusing her research on the rhythms of Turkey and the Balkans, particularly the ones counted in 9 beats.
She has performed as a session musician and solo artist in festivals and venues such as ESNS (NL), Glimps Festival (BE), Zorlu PSM (TR), Rye Wax (UK), Saristra Festival (GR), Fengaros Festival (CY), AFOM Festival (TR), MCF (GR), Tiiiit! Festival (MK). Additionally, Danae has composed music for film and theatre and has been teaching drums, piano and music theory for the past decade.
She is currently working on her debut album which will be released in 2024.
